2012, PPCB Conference in Wildbad Kreuth, Bavaria - May 7-9

"Close to the tiny village of Kreuth, at the southern end of Lake Tegernsee in Bavaria, Germany, lies Wildbad Kreuth, a spring with reputed healing properties. This place can probably only be found on very regional maps. In rough terms, it is a one-hour drive away from Munich (to the south-east) at the northern end of the Alps. Today, 'Wildbad Kreuth' is more commonly associated with the yellow building complex which was erected near the spring itself in the 16th Century. That complex was destroyed by fire, rebuilt, abandoned, re-rebuilt, set on fire, re-re-built, abandoned and re-re-re-built. 2008 and 2009

During her term as President of IPWSO. Pam Eisen was committed to the idea that the caregivers of those with PWS should have a "home", a conference of their own where they could share ideas and receive support for the challenges that they face.  The First Caregivers' Conference was held at the Akademie Mont Cenis in Herne in 2008.  This fantastic "green" complex which was itself housed in a glass edifice, gave the conference an air of industriousness as well as relaxation - it was fine, no matter what the weather.

Both years the conferences were hosted by Norbert Stuntebeck-Hoedbeck from Wittekindshof, and Hubert Soyer from Regens Wagner Apsberg.

The conference - with participants from all around the world -  took the format of short lectures followed by workshops who took the lecture topic and examined it according to their profession: caregivers, teachers and educators, psychologists and psychiatrists, counsellors, and medical professionals.  At the end of the two-day conference many topics had been discussed and were brought forward at a forum where everyone could examine the different 'takes' on each topic.

Topics included: Environmental structure of living; Behaviour management; Interpersonal Relationships; Self-determination; PWS in the Classroom.

From these two conferences came the development of Standards of Care and Best Practice Guidelines (for the care of those with Prader-Willi Syndrome).

This has now become an internationally acclaimed resource for caregivers, for parents wanting to get the best care for their son, daughter, for psychologists and teachers.  It is available in CD form from IPWSO.

 2010

At the 7th IPWSO International Conference, held in Taipei, Taiwan, the PPCB held a one-day 'review' meeting which updated all interested parties about the past two specialised conferences and announced the launch of the "Guidelines" resource.  This format of a one-day conference within our international conferences will continue at our next conference in 2013 in Cambridge, UK.  These days are set aside for professional care-providers and care-givers and will provide a unique chance for international views and exchanges.
