2022 IPWSO Conference Bid - IRELAND

Limerick

We propose to hold the conference on the fully accessible and magnificent parkland campus of the University of Limerick, located at the heart of the Shannon region on Ireland’s west coast. The University of Limerick is renowned for its modern conference facilities, with seating available for up to 1000 delegates in the state of the art concert hall, excellent and very affordable accommodation with a wide variety of dining options from self-catering to five-star dining. The University has some of the best sporting facilities in Ireland, including a 50 metre Olympic sized swimming pool, fully-equipped gym, running tracks, tennis courts and football pitches, all of which are available to delegates attending the conference.

Limerick is accessible through three international airports, Shannon, Cork and Dublin, which offer daily flights from the UK, Europe, the Middle East and North America. Regular bus and train services connect all three airports directly to the University of Limerick with Journey times of 20 minutes 1.5 hours and 2 hours respectively.

Contribute and benefit!

The Irish PWS Association (PWSAI) has long believed that it can both contribute to and benefit from the global PWS community.  We are bidding for the 2022 IPWSO conference both as a means of strengthening the global PWS community and the PWS community in Ireland.

We believe that by providing an accessible, affordable and attractive location for the 2022 IPWSO conference we can facilitate a large meeting of clinicians and scientists, professional caregivers, families, and people with PWS, where the latest research can be showcased and discussed, new professional collaborations can be cultivated, families can learn from professionals and each other, and people with PWS can join together in a positive,  inclusive and memorable Irish experience.

We are strongly committed to sharing the benefits of the conference throughout the world and, if successful, we plan to record all presentations and make them freely available in all countries.

We believe that Ireland would directly benefit from hosting the conference as would energize our community, further educate our professionals and families, allow our family members with PWS to meet others with PWS, and enable us to advocate for improved supports for people with PWS.

We believe hosting the conference would lead to raised awareness of PWS among Irish researchers and encourage our universities and the numerous pharmaceutical companies based in Ireland to become involved to a greater extent with research well in advance of a 2022 Conference. We are already actively involved in two new academic studies which commenced in 2019.

Hosting the conference would afford us an opportunity to extend the hand of friendship to the PWS community in Northern Ireland and hopefully act as a catalyst for further collaboration and mutual support on an all- island basis.

Welcome!

We are the land of the ‘Céad Míle Fáilte’ or ‘A Hundred Thousand Welcomes’ which we happily extend to all our visitors. The Shannon region is located on the west coast of Ireland and sits alongside the Wild Atlantic Way, the world’s longest sign-posted coastal drive. The 2,500km stretch of glorious rugged coastline is home to soaring mountains, jutting headlands, breath-taking cliff faces and lush green forests. In Limerick, visit St Johns Castle and Bunratty Castle. Just over an hour’s drive away lies Blarney Castle in Cork, where the gift of eloquence is bestowed on all those that kiss the famous Blarney stone.

The sights of Galway, and the world-renowned Cliffs of Moher, are both less than a 90 minute drive north and Dublin, with its numerous visitor attractions is a 2 hour, drive / train journey from the University with direct bus links from the campus.

The Irish PWS community is strong, cohesive and fully supportive of our bid.   Most people with PWS in Ireland are involved in the Irish PWS association (PWSAI), which currently has a membership of 110 families and is run by a fulltime staff member who is paid by the Irish state.  PWSAI holds family meetings, training events and has conducted national PWS conferences, including one in conjunction with IPWSO in 2015.   We believe that the experience and commitment of our community will enable us to successfully host the 2022 conference in a way that is memorable, affordable and productive for all.  Our bid also has the wholehearted support of Irish professionals working with people with PWS in disciplines including endocrinology, psychiatry and social care.

PWSAI enjoys close links with IPWSO with delegates from Ireland having attended 7 of the 10 past IPWSO Conferences. During the 2013-2016 term two IPWSO board members were from Ireland and during the 2016-2019 term one IPWSO board member was from Ireland.

As a result of this close relationship between IPWSO and PWSAI we believe that PWSAI understands what is necessary to host an IPWSO conference that will bring benefits to both Ireland and the global PWS community.
